More descriptive errors displayed in frontend when backend returns error

Currently, the frontend shows small text near the top when, for example, it cannot connect to backend, or receives Unauthorized error. These need to be more descriptive and prominent to most easily alert admins that something needs debugging, and perhaps add common recommendations.
