freebsd build failure due to non-gnu make

I stumbled over pynacl suddenly breaking our CI on freebsd 14.3.

The pynacl devs recommended installing gmake and setting MAKE=gmake and pointed out that this is a libsodium thing and they can't do anything about it.

Then I searched for "gmake" here and did not find any docs or related issues.

Are the missing docs a bug?

But I found this:

dnl Search all the common names for GNU make
for a in "$MAKE" make gmake gnumake ; do

That means on freebsd (by default, without MAKE being set), it would prefer the non-gnu "make" over the GNU "gmake", even if the latter is installed.

Is that a bug?

Pynacl may have different requirements, but for libsodium, any variant of "make" should work.

On FreeBSD, libsodium is available in the ports, so maybe you can simply install the package, and then pynacl can use it.

Maybe it should work, but you can see in that really long traceback in the issue I linked that it does not. When I switched that to GNU make, it worked.

Thanks for the hint to the system package, that might be a workaround (== somebody else solved the issue somehow), but still it would be nice if installing the pypi pynacl would just work.
