Custom sources that combine singles/structures/channels should keep the structured view in the CP. Or there should be a way to view the sites structure (sitemap) in the CP

Most websites i create with craft these days have an extra pages section (structure) and a bunch of default pages (singles) for example Home, Contact, Products, Blog, Team etc...

The default pages serve as the backbone of the site while the extra pages can be used to create extra content pages on the fly using a block builder matrix field.

I then group the default pages using a custom source and that gives me this result

Now both of these sources contain pages so what I would like to achieve is a way to merge the two without losing the hierarchy (structure view)

I've experienced a lot of clients getting lost in the organisation of different entry types. For example they want to change a blog article and can't find it nested under the Blog overview (single) page because it has it's own entry type.

I'm not really sure about my solution to enable custom source types with structures and singles etc.. to be combined. But I feel like there should be a way to view all the entries with a URI (twig template) in a structured way in the CP. Maybe a separate view in the all entries source that acts as sort of a sitemap view. The hierarchy would be based on URI structure only. so an article with uri domain/blog/article-title should be nested under a single blog with uri domain/blog.

Let me know what you think about this idea?

@BramMortier There have been a lot of discussions on how to improve the display of content in a way that is more intuitive for authors. To get a better overview of this you can take a look at the links under "Unified Content View" in Craft's roadmap.

It seems that P&T didn't have the bandwidth to tackle this in time for Craft 5 so I'm really looking forward to related improvements in Craft 6.

Thanks for the heads up! Unified content view is a fancy word that at first didn't seem connected to my issue but I'm happy it's a hot discussion topic. Looking forward to see what solution they come up with.
