After taking a closer look at this task and the current codebase, I’ve realized that I’m not yet at a stage where I can effectively de-flake these tests. I'm still very new to the Android testing ecosystem and I don't want to hold up the progress of the project while I learn the basics.
I’m going to unassign myself so someone else can tackle this. I'll continue following the project to learn from how this eventually gets resolved. Thanks for the opportunity.

If this issue is still available, I’d really like to take ownership of it.

I want to be transparent that I’m still building up hands-on experience with the Android testing ecosystem (Robolectric, coroutine testing, etc.), but I’m fully committed to learning what’s needed and putting in the effort to fix this properly. I won’t rush changes or block progress — I’ll validate everything carefully and ask for guidance where appropriate.

I’m ready to give this my full focus and 100% effort until it’s resolved. If you feel it’s better suited for someone more experienced, I completely understand and am happy to pick up a smaller or more beginner-friendly task instead.

I’m reviewing Robolectric testing patterns first. I’ll post an update once I’ve reproduced the flakiness and have a concrete plan.

Just sharing an update on my local setup progress.

I now have the project building and running locally without issues. I installed Android Studio Canary to match the AGP version used in the repo and switched Gradle to use JDK 21 (Eclipse Temurin). After that, Gradle sync completed cleanly.

I’ve also set up a Pixel 7 emulator and was able to build and launch AnkiDroid successfully on it. In addition to that, I ran the unit tests locally from the CLI (jacocoUnitTestReport and testPlayDebugUnitTest) to make sure the test pipeline is working end-to-end on my machine.

Everything looks stable on my side now and aligns with what CI expects. My next step is to spend some time going through the test structure and overall testing workflow before starting to dig into the flaky test issue itself.
