Close hover without hitting ESC

When using other editors: NeoVim, Zed, VSCode, hitting direction keys/hjkl when the hover info is open in normal mode closes it and continues vim motions as normal. In JetBrains editors, however, you typically have to hit ESC for the hover to close. I have noticed this is somewhat inconsistent as in Rider it sometimes works like this, and other times (and in other editors like WebStorm) it does not.

Is there a way to fix this / disable this behaviour, as persistent googling and scouring various forums hasn't yielded answers? Or is this just a known annoyance that I have to live with? It is the only "big" gripe I have with using JetBrains editors, which I otherwise love dearly.

I have not tested this, but there is a set command called lookupkeys that might fix this. From the docs:

'lookupkeys'            string  (default "<Tab>,<Down>,<Up>,<Enter>,
                                          <Left>,<Right>,<C-Down>,<C-Up>,
                                          <PageUp>,<PageDown>, <C-J>,<C-Q>")
                        global
        Comma-separated list of keys that should be processed by the IDE while
        a code completion lookup popup is active. For example, <Tab> and
        <Enter> are used by the IDE to complete the lookup and insert text,
        but <C-W> should be passed IdeaVim to continue editing the text.

You could try to remove the direction keys from the list, and see if that works. I have not tested this though, so it is possible that it does not solve anything.

No dice, unfortunately. Neither setting the updated list through setglobal, nor set seems to do anything for the hover. Reading the docs it'd seem like it the lookupkeys only affects the completion menu, but not the hover.

I think this is unrelated. I had a very quick look and it seems that in some scenarios, the hover documentation tooltip takes the focus and in others it doesn't, and focus remains in the editor.

When the editor has the focus, then movement keys will hide the popup. But when the popup has focus, then movement keys do nothing, because the editor doesn't see them.

I don't know why the popup gets the focus for some file types but not others.
